We had such an amazing time in Acadia National Park that we decided to go to Maine again. Perhaps we'll make this an annual tradition. After all, we've mastered a fool-proof recipe for happiness that is guaranteed to make your cholesterol levels skyrocket. It includes: good company, a beautiful hike and of course a meal of freshly steamed lobster dipped in melted butter, croissant rolls, clam steamers, steak and potatoes (which is technically a vegetable so in all, a balanced diet). Maine continues to deliver as a great summer getaway from the city; definitely check it out!
Day 1
- Arrived at cabin in Bethel, Maine (the drive took about 4-5 hours from Boston). There are no street lights once you get near the private properties so make sure you bring a flashlight. Also bring extra blankets (even in summer, the nights can get chilly) and mosquito repellent.
Day 2
- Brunch
- Hike @ Step Falls- cute waterfall at the top!
- Kayaking on the Androscoggin River. We rented our kayaks through Bethel Outdoor Adventures.
- Lobster Dinner courtesy of Bethel Bait. Initially, we were concerned that we wouldn't be able to find lobster in Bethel since it is located so far inland, but we were foolish to doubt. There were plenty of lobsters; the going rate was about $6/lb.
Day 3
- Brunch
- Portland, Maine
- Coffee By Design
- Portland Flea for All. Many floors of treasures waiting to be bought- great for antiquing though on the pricier side (as far as flea markets go).
- Gilbert's Chowder House
- Drive home
